Ford Insurance Groups

Ford insurance spans pretty much the entire range from the Ka (from group 2 usually) right up to the GT at group 20 (though in fact it's no longer possible to buy a new GT from a Ford dealer).
At present, most insurers are rating the cheapest Ford to insure at 2, which is no doubt an issue that will be addressed when they release their new city car next year (or possibly in 2008?).
The company's GT was rated at 20, which we understand essentially means consult your insurer - the variation in insurance costs for group 20 cars is immense, but if you can afford a GT, then presumably you've got some money set aside for insurance.
Whilst we doubt that anyone is surprised by the variation between the tiny Ka and the awesome GT supercar, we think you won't be expecting the variation of groups across major ranges such as the Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo.
In the case of the Fiesta, the groups start at a lowly 3 for the 1.2 Fiesta Freedom, and range up to 13 for the new Fiesta ST.
In the Focus class, the scale is even more extreme. The bottom of the range starts at only 4 for the 1.4 LX, but rises right up to 17 for the Ford Focus ST, ST2 and ST3. That's very close to the group for a Porsche Boxster for example, though of course the list price is considerably less than that for the Boxster so don't expect the actual premiums to be the same. Despite that, we're intrigued by the fact that variations of a single range can span such a huge range.
In the Mondeo range, the spread of groups is less significant, thought it still varies from group 8 for the 1.8 Mondeo Edge, through to 16 for the ST220 and the 3 litre Ghia X and Titanium models.
