Lexus Insurance Groups

It will be no surprise to Lexus owners that the insurance group of their car is somewhat higher than the group for a similar 'non-prestige' car.
We were interested to compare the different insurance groups for Toyota cars compared to the company's premium brand Lexus. And weren't surprised to find that the Lexus groups are higher.
For example, compare the groups for Toyota's Avensis, and Lexus's new IS series:-
The Avensis range of starts with a 1.8 litre engine in T2 trim for which the insurance group is a reasonable group 7. Of course levels rise as you progress throught the range, so a 1.8 T4 will be group 8 and the 2 litre models tend to be group 9. Most of teh 2.2 diesel models are group 9 or perhaps 10 whilst the new Avensis T180 diesel is, not suprisingly a group 12, as are the 2.4 litre cars.
However, even the cheapest, least powerful 2.2 litre Diesel lexus (the IS220D) attracts a group 12 rating, and the other 200D's are all a group higher than that. The 2.5 litre petrol cars range from group 13 through group 14.
So our conclusion is that the Lexus cars cost slightly more to insure than a Toyota with similar performance. Of course this shouldn't be so surprising. It seems likely that they are slightly more attractive to thieves. They're also rear wheel drive, which tends to be the choice of drivers who push their cars a little bit harder, and doubtless they cost more to repair if they are involved in an accident.
In conclusion, there is a difference in insurance group between Toyota's regular cars, and their premium brand, but we actually expected the difference to be greater than it is.
