Blue Badge Parking

Advice from the IAM on parking for Blue Badge Holders

Road safety charity the IAM is offering weekly motoring tips from Britain’s top advanced driver, Peter Rodger. This week, he is advising on parking with a Blue Badge.

  • If you can, and if it allows you the access you need, reverse into your parking space - it’s safer that way, and will mean that you will do all of your manoeuvring with a warm engine, rather than having to do so when you’re leaving.

  • It’s very important to keep within the lines of the bays – many people will need additional space for wheelchairs to fit between vehicles, so extra space is a necessity.

  • Don’t forget that it is illegal to let other people use your badge.  Most people are responsible, but unfortunately it does happen, and it brings the scheme into disrepute.

  • All the normal parking advice about choosing your place to park applies, if there is that kind of choice.  Avoid the bay next to the trolley park, for example…

  • If spaces are in short supply, and you’re the one being driven, ask to be dropped off by the door, meaning the driver is unrestricted in where they park – this will leave any remaining blue badge spaces available for others who may need them.

  •  If you’re going to be parking on the road in the centre of town, try to avoid parking near sharp bends, junctions and bus stops, and also avoid rush hour if you can.

  • If you’re going abroad, remember that your blue badge is not universally recognised, so check the regulations of your holiday destination before you set off.

“It is a great shame that the worth-while Blue Badge scheme has a negative reputation amongst many people. With a little consideration and understanding, Blue Badge parking can be beneficial for everyone. ”
IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger
