IAM comment on motorway lights being turned off

Kevin Delaney, Head of Road Safety at the IAM, said: “It’s a lot less stressful to drive when the road ahead of you is lit. Modern headlamps are very good, but they do not shine far enough ahead to enable you to stop in time for an unexpected obstacle when travelling at motorway speeds - at 70mph the stopping distance is 315ft. Motorway lamp posts are very high off the ground, and bringing them closer to the road and using more modern technology will help save energy and reduce light pollution.”

Walk the Rowthorne Trail

Seventeen members, partners and friends turned up at this month’s extra social event.

We started from the "Nags Head" at Pleasley to walk along Rowthorne Trail through Rowthorne village and return over the pit tip - now Pleasley nature reserve and by the Pleasley Colliery that is under refurbishment and to open as a mining museum.

The weather was very kind to us this year, the two previous years being rather wet, but on this occasion a warm, sunny, clear evening provided views of Hardwick Hall, Crich in Derbyshire, and the power stations at Staythorpe and Markham near Tuxford.

Everyone enjoyed the evening but a few were a little weary after the 2 hour walk of about 4 1/2 miles. Some of us also enjoyed a refreshing drink at the pub to end the evening!

Picture available in the new Events Gallery.

Parents and Relatives

I’d like to draw the attention of parents and other relatives of young drivers to two recent IAM press releases.

Firstly, this one highlights the effect that our own driving can have on the habits that others will adopt, and secondly this one about insurance for young drivers.

I’m sure that all parents of young drivers are keen to know that their children are safe behind the wheel - whether they’re driving their own car or yours. These two articles highlight how you can encourage good driving skills and practice in a positive way, and also show that joining the IAM could make financial sense for young drivers.

If I think back (and yes it is a long time ago) my personal experiences as a teenage motorcyclist and motorist back up both of...........

Website changes

Thanks for the kind feedback that a few members have made regarding the new look website.

For anyone who hasn’t yet commented on it, please do drop me a mail at webmaster@mansfieldadvancedmotorists.org.uk

I’m keen to receive any feedback, whether positive or negative. I may only post the positive ones in the blog ;) but I’ll try to make improvements to the site based on any other contributions you have.

IAM Testimonials

I think the IAM’s new Testimonials page is a great idea so I’ve added information about it as a link at the top of the this page.

Before seeing this, I had hoped to encourage some of our members to write some testimonials of this nature for our website. For anyone considering joining the IAM and/or our Group I think its ideal for them to read something written by someone who they can relate to; that is, someone who had similar reasons for joining to their own. For that reason, contributions from a wide range of drivers would be great, so can I ask all of our members to write one and then we’re sure to have covered most of the possible reasons. Please.

If anyone in the Group decides to contribute a testimonial to the IAM’s site, could they please also consider letting us put that on our site too. It would be great content for us, and very useful for potential new members.

Thanks,

Publicity Anyone

Does anyone have any ideas that can help with publicity of the group?

Perhaps you feel we could advertise more, or should be speaking to more local organisations to tell them about the skills we offer?

Or maybe you have some great contacts in businesses who would consider sponsoring our guidances in return for links on our website and/or publicity for themselves at our guidance sessions.

Any ideas you have on how we can let more people know about our group and its work would be most welcome!

Thanks.

Added the Blog

Added a blog page to the intranet today.

This is a great place to store little snippets of information. These can be grouped by Categories and Tags. So for example this Blog Entry has the Category of Website and Tags of Blog and Help.

As the snippets (or Blog Entries) build up, you can easily find all of the ones that match a particular Category or Tag by clicking on the links in the sidebar to the right of this entry.

I’m not sure how useful the Blog Page will be for our Site, but I think it’s worth trying it out.

Chairman's Introduction

Just a reminder that this month i.e. July we have an extra social event. It being a walk in the local area organised by our treasurer Derek. Hopefully Derek has booked some good weather as it appears to be at the time of writing this chat. I am sure it will prove as enjoyable and interesting as his last walk even though that was in the rain, so come along and have a good chat, exercise and enjoy the countryside

Hopefully we are all now adjusting to the new meeting and guidance times which I agree take some getting used to especially to us old timers. If you have any comments on this please let a member of the Committee know. We do appreciate your feedback.

Doug Taylor, Chairman
